A Note From The Artist
September 19, 2009 The intent of this blog is to share with the public a holistic view of the processes involved in the creation of my work. I will begin this practice of explication by deconstructing "Likkle Lord Blakely". Lest I incite certain negative intimations from my reader due to the apparent hauteur arising from the given title, I would rid from the reader's mind any notion of affectation. Allow me to first unveil the assumed structure of the title and its use of Patois, before undertaking to dispel its apparent loftiness by divulging the humble origins from whence it was bestowed upon my person.
The physical framework of this appellation, as seen on the pixellated screen, alludes to "Little Lord Fauntleroy" a children's book by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The use of likkle, is derived from my predilection for the aesthetics of Jamaican culture. These two devices are however peripheral, merely adding color and flourish to my incongruous epithet, for I was dubbed "Lord Blakely", while working at a grocery store. A coworker and fellow brother in the proletariat struggle, bequeathed unto me the title of Lord, amidst the bagging, checking, and stacking of articles of food and drink that make up the quotidian proceedings in the life of a grocer.
Dear reader, it is vital you discern the contrary employment of this moniker, for the tone of usage will reveal insight into my oeuvre. The chosen title reflects my propensity for appropriation and the amalgamation of discordant imagery and themes, understanding this paradox will be quite instructive as we commence in scrutinizing the works of yours truly.
